Global Talent is the UK’s route for recognised leaders — and potential leaders — in research, digital technology and the arts. Its defining feature is freedom: no sponsor, no minimum salary, no tie to one employer.
How it works
The application has two stages. First, a designated endorsing body assesses your track record — for example UKRI or the British Academy for researchers, Tech Nation for digital technology, Arts Council England for arts and culture. Winners of certain major prizes (from Nobel Prizes to named industry awards) skip endorsement entirely. Second, once endorsed, the visa application itself is straightforward.
Why people choose it over Skilled Worker
You can change employers, hold several roles, freelance or found a company without telling the Home Office. There is no salary test, which matters for academics and artists whose pay does not fit Skilled Worker thresholds. Exceptional-talent endorsees and academics reach settlement in three years rather than five. The trade-off is the evidential burden: endorsement requires a documented record of recognition, and preparing the evidence is the real work of the application.
Who it suits
Researchers with fellowships or academic appointments, senior engineers and founders with a public track record, and artists with international recognition. If your record is good but not yet at that level, Skilled Worker with a sponsoring employer is usually the realistic route, with Global Talent as a later upgrade.
Route to settlement and citizenship
- Global Talent visa
- Indefinite Leave to Remain after 3 or 5 years
- British citizenship
Global Talent leads to ILR after three years for those endorsed under the exceptional talent or academic criteria, and after five years otherwise. There is no salary threshold at settlement, but you must show that you earned money in the UK in your field during your most recent period of permission.
You can apply for British citizenship once you have held ILR for twelve months and meet the residence and good-character requirements.
